Cutting-Edge Dental Tools for Preventive Care

The best way to keep your smile healthy is with great at-home oral care and regular checkups from Dr. Samuels. To reduce your risk of cavities, gum disease, and other common oral health issues, we use two major dental innovations during your six-month visits to our office:

  • AirFlow for guided biofilm therapy – AirFlow is an alternative to traditional dental prophylaxis (cleanings). Rather than using scrapers and a rubber cup “brush” to remove plaque and tartar from your smile, AirFlow uses a mixture of compressed air, water, and fine powder. This removes plaque, tartar, and stains from your smile, leaving it bright, shiny, and healthy – all without any pain or discomfort.
  • Salivary diagnostics with OralDNA – With OralDNA, Dr. Samuels can take a swab from your cheek, send it in, and identify the types of bacteria in your mouth. In turn, this can help prevent cavities, gum disease, and even identify risk factors for oral cancer. Knowledge is power, and with OralDNA, Dr. Samuels will help you learn more about your mouth, your oral health challenges, and how you can protect your smile.

Enhanced Imaging for Diagnosis & Treatment Planning

We don’t just use advanced technology to clean your teeth. We’ve also invested in powerful imaging technology that helps Dr. Samuels and our team diagnose oral health issues, plan restorative treatments like dental implants, and more:

  • Digital X-ray technology – Compared to film-based X-rays, digital X-rays are much more comfortable and require less exposure to radiation. They're also available instantly. As soon as your X-rays are taken, Dr. Samuels and our team can analyze them to look for signs of common oral health issues.
  • Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) – CBCT is a type of X-ray scan that produces 3D images of the body by taking hundreds of “sliced” images. Using a powerful computer program, these are stitched together to create a 3D image of your teeth, gums, jawbone, and face. These incredibly accurate scans are a powerful tool for diagnosing oral health issues and for planning treatments such as dental implants or tooth extractions.
  • iTero 3D scanner – With our 3D iTero scanner, there’s no need for gunky, gag-inducing dental impressions when planning treatments like veneers or crowns. This scanner takes thousands of pictures of your teeth, stitching them into a 3D model of your mouth. With this scan, Dr. Samuels can easily plan your treatment with absolutely no need for traditional putty-based impressions.
  • Intraoral cameras – We also have intraoral cameras with real-time chairside imaging. This technology lets Dr. Samuels get a closer look at your gums, teeth, and oral tissue, and you can follow along right from the dentist’s chair!

Laser Dentistry for Patient Comfort and Faster Recovery

Laser dentistry is one of the most important advances in technology in dental care when it comes to enhancing patient comfort. At our office, we use an Odyssey soft tissue diode laser for gum disease treatment and gum contouring.

Laser dental tools work by using a laser to heat up a tiny piece of glass. When the laser touches tissue like the gums, it’s vaporized on contact. Since they're so hot, dental lasers seal the tissue upon contact, which reduces bleeding and virtually eliminates the need for stitches.

Diode lasers also seal up the nerve endings, which virtually eliminates pain and the need for sedation. Not only that, but the high heat of dental lasers helps sanitize the treatment area, which reduces the risk of future infections and speeds up the healing process.

CEREC CAD/CAM Dentistry for Same-Day Dental Restorations

If you’ve got a busy schedule but need a dental crown, modern dentistry can help! With CEREC from the office of Dr. Jay H. Samuels, you can get a new crown in just one visit to our office in Bethesda.

CEREC is a type of CAD/CAM (Computer-Aided Design/Manufacturing) technology. Using a special camera, software, and a powerful milling machine, Dr. Samuels can design and create restorations like dental crowns in just a single visit.

The process starts by scanning your mouth with our 3D scanner. This creates a model that Dr. Samuels uploads into a CEREC software program. Using this program, he’ll create your dental crown and make sure it fits perfectly.

Then, Dr. Samuels will load a block of tooth-colored porcelain into the CEREC machine, which will trim it into the proper shape in just a few minutes. Then, he’ll grab the crown, check it to make sure it fits properly, and bond it permanently in place.

With CEREC, there’s no need to wear a temporary crown, wait weeks for a lab-made crown to be delivered, or come back for multiple visits. In just a single two-hour visit, you can get a brand-new tooth at the office of Dr. H Jay Samuels.
